It is a vibrant hub for nature exploration and environmental education in southwest Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. The organization&#8217;s rich history of conservation and science education is a testament to its<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0commitment to reconnecting people with the natural world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">This commitment is exemplified through their Arctic Science Day programming\u2014<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">a unique learning experience for grade 7-12 students to increase their understanding of the impacts of climate change in the Arctic and<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0learn about careers in Arctic climate change research from environmental scientists themselves.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_270354\" style=\"width: 1930px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-270354\" class=\"wp-image-270354 size-full lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" alt=\"FortWhyte Alive\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1300\" data-src=\"https:\/\/good-nature-blog-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2024\/09\/fort-aerial.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-270354\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u00a9 FortWhyte Alive<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In 2024, Nat Hab Philanthropy was proud to support FortWhyte Alive and the University of Manitoba Center for Earth Observation Science\u2019s two Arctic Science Day events: <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">A virtual Arctic science experience reached over 300 students and their teachers, including <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">a number of<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> participating classrooms in remote Northern Manitoba and<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fortwhyte.org\/arctic-science-day-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">16th Annual Arctic Science Day<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> at FortWhyte Alive.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">For the in-person event, nearly 140 students and their teachers learned about Arctic research, including:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">marine mammals<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">ocean acidification<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">contaminants such as mercury and oil spills<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">sediment coring<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Arctic microbiology\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">snow science<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"attachment_270358\" style=\"width: 1930px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-270358\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-270358 size-full lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" alt=\"Arctic Science Day 2024 FortWhyte Alive\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1300\" data-src=\"https:\/\/good-nature-blog-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Arctic-Science-Day-2024-2-1600x1067-1.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-270358\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Arctic Science Day 2024 \u00a9 FortWhyte Alive<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">FortWhyte Alive<\/span><\/strong> <strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Arctic Science Day Activities<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Arctic Science Day at FortWhyte Alive was brimming with educational adventures designed to immerse students in the study of polar science and environmental stewardship. The event featured <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">a series of<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0interactive activities\u00a0that brought the Arctic\u2019s unique ecosystems into focus through hands-on learning experiences.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Students had the opportunity to engage in\u00a0simulated field research akin to that conducted by scientists in the Arctic. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">They participated in\u00a0ice core drilling exercises, <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">where they extracted<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> samples from ice blocks and <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">analyzed<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> them to understand the historical climate data stored within them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Another highlight was the\u00a0wildlife tracking station, where students learned to identify animal tracks and understand the behaviors of Arctic fauna.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The climate change simulation booth uses augmented reality technology to allow students to witness the effects of global warming on polar ice caps<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> Traditional Inuit games\u00a0provided a cultural perspective, teaching students about the indigenous peoples of the Arctic and their survival skills.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_270359\" style=\"width: 1930px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-270359\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-270359 size-full lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" alt=\"Arctic Science Day 2024 FortWhyte Alive\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1300\" data-src=\"https:\/\/good-nature-blog-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Arctic-Science-Day-2024-4-scaled-1.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-270359\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Arctic Science Day 2024 \u00a9 FortWhyte Alive<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">One teacher reported, <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201c<\/span><\/em><strong><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Students have been <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">talking about the impacts of climate change<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> on the animals and Inuit communities ever since we&#8217;ve returned to school.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Arctic Science Day activities were <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">not only educational but also<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> aimed to inspire a sense of wonder and responsibility.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> Hands-on learning opportunities offered a tangible connection to the science curriculum, making the concepts of climate change and conservation more relatable and impactful for students. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">FortWhyte Alive\u2019s Arctic Science Day was a testament to the power of experiential learning in nurturing the next generation of climate scientists and conservationists.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Another teacher shared: <\/span><strong><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;The most valuable parts for my students included meeting scientists, seeing artifacts, participating in learning games and hands-on activities.&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Students said:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cI learned that marine mammals use echolocation and different calls to communicate.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cI learned about taking sediment cores and the impact of pH on ocean life.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cI learned that cold water absorbs carbon and warm water releases it. The more carbon in the water, the more acidic it gets. After Arctic Science Day 2024, 92% of students stated they had a better understanding of the impact of climate change in the Arctic after the program, and the majority <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">stated<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> that learning about the impact was the most valuable part of the day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The event\u2019s success will be measured by inspiring future careers in science and environmental studies and<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0encouraging students to consider their role in reducing human impact on our shared environment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Thirty graduate students, faculty and researchers from the University of Manitoba, along with FortWhyte Alive Education Team staff, supported the program delivery for the day<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_270347\" style=\"width: 633px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-270347\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-270347 size-full lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" alt=\"bison buffalo conservation safari FortWhyte Alive\" width=\"623\" height=\"900\" data-src=\"https:\/\/good-nature-blog-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2024\/09\/bison-safari.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-270347\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u00a9 FortWhyte Alive<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Meeting graduate students and scientists <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">seemed to have<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">a particularly strong<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> impact on younger students.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> They reported afterward:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cI learned how people recognize individual sea mammals and how they estimate the size of their populations.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cI learned that there are <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">lots of<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> jobs you can do that involve Arctic science.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201c<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">There are many technologies<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> involved in studying marine mammals, like drones, planes and satellites.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cThere\u2019s a bunch of jobs and careers related to Arctic science, and it is <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">a very meaningful<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> career for this generation.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">By bringing the mysteries of the Arctic closer to home, FortWhyte Alive <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">not only educates but also<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> inspires action toward preserving these critical habitats for generations to come.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_270353\" style=\"width: 760px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-270353\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-270353 size-full lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" alt=\"family science education nature FortWhyte Alive diversity\" width=\"750\" height=\"900\" data-src=\"https:\/\/good-nature-blog-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2024\/09\/family-water-exploration.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-270353\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u00a9 FortWhyte Alive<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Conservation Education &amp; Students get to participate in a traditional blanket toss game as a group. We discuss ways that students can reduce greenhouse gas emissions and pollution.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Teacher feedback includes:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The program increased students\u2019 awareness of actions to reduce pollution.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The students say that the most fun was the blanket toss\u2014<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">they enjoyed learning about its cultural purpose for the Inuit<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, as well as enjoying that they were all<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> working together.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In 2024, FortWhyte Alive hosted two schools for Due North programs for <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">a total of<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> 80 students.
